Past Tense in Ukrainian
Past Tense Formation (-в/-ла/-ло/-ли)
The Ukrainian past tense is formed from the infinitive stem by adding gender and number suffixes: -в (or zero) for masculine, -ла for feminine, -ло for neuter, -ли for plural.
The Ukrainian Past Tense (Минулий час) indicates actions that occurred prior to the moment of speech. Unlike the present tense, past tense verbs agree with the subject in grammatical gender (in the singular) and number, rather than taking personal endings.
Past Tense Suffixes added to the vowel infinitive stem: - Masculine singular: Suffix -в (чита-в, зна-в, роби-в, ходи-в). Verbs with consonant stems drop the -ти with no suffix added (ніс, віз, біг, міг). - Feminine singular: Suffix -ла (чита-ла, роби-ла, нес-ла). - Neuter singular: Suffix -ло (чита-ло, роби-ло, нес-ло). - Plural (all genders and persons): Suffix -ли (чита-ли, роби-ли, нес-ли).
Vowel Alternation (і / о, е): When an open syllable becomes closed in the masculine past, historical vowel lengthening creates a characteristic alternation: нести → ніс (masc) vs. несла (fem); везти → віз (masc) vs. везла (fem); могти → міг (masc) vs. могла (fem).
Because personal pronouns are often omitted, context or explicit subjects clarify the person (я читав / я читала).
