First conjugation verbs feature the theme vowel -е- (or -є- after vowels) in 3rd person singular and -уть/-ють in 3rd person plural (читати → читає, читають).
Ukrainian verbs in the present tense are divided into two main conjugation classes based on their stem vowel. First Conjugation Verbs (І дієвідміна) are characterized by the vowel -е- (after consonants) or -є- (after vowels) in the singular and 1st/2nd person plural, and -уть / -ють in the 3rd person plural.
Personal Endings for 1st Conjugation: - я: -у / -ю (пишу, читаю) - ти: -еш / -єш (пишеш, читаєш) - він / вона / воно: -е / -є (пише, читає) - ми: -емо / -ємо (пишемо, читаємо) - ви: -ете / -єте (пишете, читаєте) - вони: -уть / -ють (пишуть, читають)
Verbs belonging to the 1st conjugation include most infinitives ending in -ати/-яти (читати, знати, гуляти), -увати/-ювати (працювати → працюю), -ти with consonant stems (нести → несу, несе), and monosyllabic stems (пити → п'ю, п'є).
Consonant mutations often occur throughout the paradigm: писати → пишу, пишеш, могти → можу, можеш, хотіти → хочу, хочеш.
