Indefinite & Negative Pronouns in Czech
Indefinite and Negative Pronouns (někdo, nikdo, něco, nic)
Prefixes ně- form indefinite pronouns (někdo, něco, nějaký), while ni- forms negative pronouns requiring mandatory double verb negation (nikdo nepřišel).
In Czech, *Indefinite (Neurčitá) and Negative (Záporná)* pronouns are systematically derived from interrogative base stems using productive prefixal and suffixal markers:
1. Indefinite Pronouns with Prefix 'ně-' (some- / any-): - někdo (someone / somebody) - něco (something) - nějaký (some kind of / a certain) - některý (some / a particular one from a group) - někde (somewhere), někdy (sometimes), někam (to somewhere).
2. Free-Choice / Arbitrary Indefinites with '-koliv' or 'kde-': - kdokoliv / kdokoli (anyone / whoever) - cokoliv / cokoli (anything / whatever) - kdekoliv (anywhere).
3. Negative Pronouns with Prefix 'ni-' (no- / none): Formed with the negative prefix ni- and strictly requiring the verb to carry the negative prefix 'ne-': - nikdo (nobody / no one) → Nikdo tam nebyl. - nic (nothing) → Nic jsem neviděl. - žádný (no / none / not any) - nikde (nowhere), nikdy (never), nikam (to nowhere).
Declension: někdo / nikdo decline like kdo (někoho, někomu, o někom, někým); něco / nic decline like co (ničeho, ničemu, o ničem, ničím).
Examples
Někdo včera večer nechal v univerzitní knihovně tuto tlustou knihu.
Someone left this thick book in the university library yesterday evening.
Nikdo z našich kolegů o tomto novém vládním nařízení dosud nevěděl.
None of our colleagues knew about this new government regulation yet.
