Question Formation & Interrogatives in Czech

Questions and Interrogative Pronouns (Otázky a tázací zájmena)

Czech forms yes/no questions via intonation and inverted word order, while wh-questions open with declined interrogative pronouns (kdo, co, jaký, který, kde, kdy, proč).

In Czech, *Question Formation (Tvoření otázek)* falls into two distinct syntactic categories:

*1. Yes/No Questions (Zjišťovací otázky): Formed without any question particles (such as Polish czy or French est-ce que). They rely primarily on rising intonation and frequently utilize verb-initial word order (Inversion): - Statement: Mluvíte česky. (You speak Czech). - Question: Mluvíte česky? (Do you speak Czech? — rising melodic contour). - Máš dnes čas? (Do you have time today?). - Byl jsi včera v divadle?* (Were you at the theater yesterday?).

*2. Wh-Questions (Doplňovací otázky): Introduced by interrogative pronouns and adverbs placed at the beginning of the clause: - Kdo? (Who? declines through all 7 cases: koho, komu, koho, o kom, kým) - Co? (What? declines: čeho, čemu, co, o čem, čím) - Kde? (Where? static location: Kde bydlíš?) - Kam? (Where to? directional destination: Kam jdeš?) - Kdy? (When? Kdy přijedeš?) - Proč? (Why? Proč se ptáš?) - Jak? (How? Jak se máš?) - Jaký? (What kind of? inflects as a hard adjective: jaký, jaká, jaké) - Který? (Which one? specific selection from a set: který, která, které*).
