Expresses direct commands, requests, and prohibitions across 2nd sg. (dělej/piš), 1st pl. (dělejme/pišme), and 2nd pl. (dělejte/pište).
The *Imperative Mood (Rozkazovací způsob)* in Czech expresses commands, instructions, entreaties, invitations, and prohibitions. It possesses distinct synthetic forms for three grammatical persons:
1. 2nd Person Singular (ty): addressed to one peer / informal 2. 1st Person Plural (my): cohortative command ('let's do') 3. 2nd Person Plural (vy): formal polite address (Vy) and plural groups.
Formation Rules based on Present Stem: - Verbs in -at (5th class): remove -at and add -ej, -ejme, -ejte: - dělat → dělej* (do!), dělejme (let's do!), dělejte (do! plural/formal). - čekat → čekej, čekejme, čekejte - Verbs with Single Consonant Stem: take zero ending -Ø, -me, -te with root vowel shortening/shift: - psát (píše) → piš, pišme, pište - číst (čte) → čti / čti, čtěme, čtěte - jít → jdi, jděme, jděte - Verbs with Consonant Clusters: add -i, -ěme/-eme, -ěte/-ete to avoid unpronounceable clusters: - tisknout → tiskni, tiskněme, tiskněte - prosit → pros, prosme, proste - být → buď, buďme, buďte* (be!).
Prohibitions and Aspect: Positive commands for single actions prefer perfective verbs (Napiš to! = Write it!), while negative prohibitions almost universally require imperfective verbs: Neotvírej okno! (Don't open the window!).
