The Present Conditional Mood in Czech
Present Conditional Mood (Podmiňovací způsob přítomný: bych, bys, by)
Constructed with l-participle + conditional auxiliary bych, bys, by, bychom, byste, by to express hypothetical situations, polite requests, and wishes.
The *Present Conditional Mood (Podmiňovací způsob přítomný / Kondicionál)* in Czech is used to formulate hypothetical conditions ('if... then'), wishes, advice, and polite requests.
Morphological Formula: Past Participle (-l, -la, -lo, -li, -ly) + Conditional Auxiliary (bych, bys, by, bychom, byste, by)
*Conjugation Paradigm (dělat = to do / make): - 1st sg.: já bych dělal / dělala or dělal/dělala bych (I would do) - 2nd sg.: ty bys dělal / dělala or dělal/dělala bys (you would do) - 3rd sg.: on/ona/ono by dělal / dělala / dělalo (he/she/it would do) - 1st pl.: my bychom dělali (we would do — colloquial bysme is non-standard!) - 2nd pl.: vy byste dělali (you would do) - 3rd pl.: oni/ony/ona by dělali / dělaly / dělala* (they would do).
Conditional Subordinating Conjunctions: When introducing conditional or purpose clauses, conditional auxiliaries fuse directly onto subordinating roots: - kdyby (if): kdybych, kdybys, kdyby, kdybychom, kdybyste, kdyby - Kdybych měl čas, šel bych do kina. (If I had time, I would go to the cinema). - aby (in order that / so that / to): abych, abys, aby, abychom, abyste, aby - Chci, abyste přišli včas. (I want you to come on time).
Examples
Kdybych měl více volného času, četl bych mnohem více historických knih.
If I had more free time, I would read many more historical books.
Chtěl bych vás poprosit o pomoc s překladem tohoto odborného textu.
I would like to ask you for help with the translation of this technical text.
Profesor si přál, abychom odevzdali všechny seminární práce do konce týdne.
The professor wished that we submit all seminar papers by the end of the week.
Rádi bychom vás pozvali na slavnostní otevření nového vědeckého centra.
We would gladly invite you to the ceremonial opening of the new scientific center.
