The Past Conditional Mood in Czech
Past Conditional Mood (Podmiňovací způsob minulý)
Constructed with byl + conditional auxiliary (bych, bys, by) + l-participle, expressing unfulfilled counterfactual past actions ('would have done').
The *Past Conditional Mood (Podmiňovací způsob minulý) in Czech expresses unfulfilled counterfactual past hypotheses* ('would have happened if...') and retrospective regret over situations that did not materialize in the past.
Morphological Construction Formula: byl / byla / bylo / byli / byly + bych, bys, by, bychom, byste, by + Past Participle (-l)
*Conjugation Paradigm (udělat = to do / make): - 1st sg.: já byl bych udělal (masc.) / byla bych udělala (fem.) (I would have done) - 2nd sg.: ty byl bys udělal (masc.) / byla bys udělala (fem.) - 3rd sg.: on byl by udělal / ona byla by udělala - 1st pl.: my byli bychom udělali - 2nd pl.: vy byli byste udělali - 3rd pl.: oni byli by udělali*.
Compound Conjunctions with Past Conditional: - Kdybych byl věděl o té nehodě, byl bych tam nejezdil. (If I had known about that accident, I would not have gone there). - In spoken Czech, the present conditional (Kdybych věděl... nejel bych) often replaces the literary past conditional, but the formal past conditional remains vital in literary prose and formal diplomatic registers.

If I had known about this serious problem, I would have helped you immediately.
Byli bychom přijeli dříve, kdyby náš vlak nebyl měl velké zpoždění.
We would have arrived earlier if our train had not had a large delay.
Profesor byl by schválil náš výzkumný projekt, kdybychom byli dodali všechny podklady.
The professor would have approved our research project if we had supplied all materials.
Byl bys dosáhl mnohem lepších výsledků, kdyby ses byl lépe připravil na zkoušku.
You would have achieved much better results if you had prepared better for the exam.
