In Czech, *Cardinal Numbers (Základní číslovky)* govern the grammatical case and number of the noun they modify according to a strict three-tier numerical system:
*1. The Number 1 (jeden, jedna, jedno): Agrees like an adjective with the noun in gender, number, and case, governing the Nominative Singular: - jeden student (1 male student) - jedna kniha (1 book) - jedno pivo* (1 beer).
*2. The Numbers 2, 3, 4 (dva/dvě, tři, čtyři): Govern the Nominative Plural of the counted noun: - dva studenti / dva stoly (2 students / 2 tables - masculine) - dvě ženy / dvě města (2 women / 2 cities - feminine/neuter take dvě) - tři knihy (3 books) - čtyři domy* (4 houses).
