Subject-Verb Agreement in Past Tense (Shoda přísudku s podmětem: -i, -y, -a)
In plural past tense, Czech spelling and agreement strictly depend on the gender of the subject: -i for masculine animate (studenti psali), -y for inanimate/feminine (stroje/ženy psaly), and -a for neuter (města byla).
In Czech grammar and orthography, *Subject-Verb Agreement in the Past Tense (Shoda přísudku s podmětem v minulém čase)* is a strict syntactic rule governing both phonological form and spelling of past participles in the plural:
1. Masculine Animate Subject → Ending -i (Palatalized): If the grammatical subject contains at least one masculine animate noun, the past participle strictly ends in -i: - Studenti včera psali test. (The male students wrote a test). - Muži a ženy pracovali společně. (Men and women worked together — masculine animate takes precedence!). - Psi štěkali celou noc. (The dogs barked all night).
2. Feminine & Masculine Inanimate Subjects → Ending -y (Hard): - Feminine subject: Ženy včera psaly zprávu. (The women wrote the report). - Masculine Inanimate subject: Stroje včera pracovaly bez chyby. (The machines worked without error yesterday). - Mixed Feminine + Inanimate: Knihy a stoly stály v rohu.
3. Neuter Plural Subject → Ending -a: - Města byla krásně osvětlena. (The cities were beautifully illuminated). - Auta včera stála v dlouhé koloně. (The cars stood in a long queue yesterday).
Writing studenti psaly or ženy psali is considered an egregious orthographic error in Czech school exams.
