German Adverbs

Adverbs (Adverbien) in German are indeclinable words that provide additional context about an action, state, or quality. Unlike adjectives, they do not change their endings to agree with nouns. German adverbs are categorized based on the questions they answer: temporal adverbs answer 'when' (e.g., heute, damals), local adverbs answer 'where' (e.g., hier, dort), modal adverbs answer 'how' (e.g., gern, vielleicht), and causal adverbs answer 'why' (e.g., darum, deshalb). Using adverbs correctly is key to making sentences detailed.

While adverbs are grammatically simple because they do not decline, their position in a sentence requires careful attention. Adverbs are often placed near the verb they modify, but they can also occupy the first position in a sentence to create emphasis, which triggers inversion (the verb remains in second position, and the subject moves after it).
