German Word Order in Questions

German syntax is highly structured, and questions follow distinct patterns based on their type. There are two primary types of questions in German: yes/no questions (Ja/Nein-Fragen) and information questions (W-Fragen). In yes/no questions, the verb moves to the first position of the sentence, followed directly by the subject. This inversion of subject and verb defines the question structure. For example, in 'Lernst du Deutsch?' (Are you learning German?), the verb 'lernst' is in position one, and the subject 'du' is in position two.

In contrast, information questions begin with a question word starting with 'W-', such as 'wer' (who), 'was' (what), 'wo' (where), 'wann' (when), or 'warum' (why). In W-Fragen, the question word occupies the first position, the conjugated verb sits in the second position, and the subject follows in the third position. For example, in 'Wo wohnst du?' (Where do you live?), 'wo' is in position one, 'wohnst' in position two, and 'du' in position three. If the verb has multiple parts (like in compound tenses), the conjugated part stays in position one or two, and the infinitive or participle goes to the very end.
