The matrix governing subjunctive selection: Present main clause takes Congiuntivo Presente (contemporaneity) or Passato (anteriority); Past main clause takes Congiuntivo Imperfetto (contemporaneity) or Trapassato (anteriority).
In Italian syntax, the *Sequence of Tenses (Consecutio temporum del congiuntivo) governs which of the four subjunctive tenses (presente, passato, imperfetto, trapassato*) must be used based on the tense of the main clause and the temporal relationship (contemporaneity, anteriority, or posteriority):
*1. Main Clause in Present or Future Indicative (Penso che...): - Contemporaneity / Present (Contemporaneità) → Congiuntivo Presente: - Penso che Marco studi adesso. (I think Marco is studying right now). - Anteriority / Past (Anteriorità) → Congiuntivo Passato: - Penso che Marco abbia studiato ieri. (I think Marco studied yesterday). - Posteriority / Future (Posteriorità) → Futuro Semplice or Congiuntivo Presente: - Penso che Marco studierà / studi domani.*
*2. Main Clause in a Past Tense or Conditional (Pensavo che... / Vorrei che...): - Contemporaneity / Simultaneous Past → Congiuntivo Imperfetto: - Pensavo che Marco studiasse in quel momento. (I thought Marco was studying at that moment). - Vorrei che tu venissi con noi. (I would like you to come with us). - Anteriority / Prior Past → Congiuntivo Trapassato: - Pensavo che Marco avesse studiato prima della prova. (I thought Marco had studied before the test). - Posteriority / Future in the Past → Condizionale Passato: - Pensavo che Marco avrebbe studiato il giorno dopo.* (I thought Marco would study the next day).
Summary Rule: Present trigger connects to Present/Passato subjunctive; Past trigger connects to Imperfetto/Trapassato subjunctive.

I think that Marco is currently at home, but yesterday I believed that he was still traveling.
