The Past Subjunctive (Congiuntivo passato) in Italian

In Italian syntax, the *Past Subjunctive (Congiuntivo passato / composto)* expresses anteriority (a completed past event) in a subordinate clause governed by a main clause verb in the present or future tense:

Structural Formula: Auxiliary in Congiuntivo Presente (abbia / sia) + Past Participle - Conjugation with Avere: che io/tu/lui abbia fatto, che noi abbiamo fatto, che voi abbiate fatto, che loro abbiano fatto - Conjugation with Essere: che io/tu/lui sia andato/a, che noi siamo andati/e, che voi siate andati/e, che loro siano andati/e.

Core Functional Usage (Anteriorità rispetto al presente): Used when the main clause verb is in the Present Indicative (or Future) and requires the subjunctive, but the subordinate action occurred in the past: - Penso che Marco sia partito ieri.
