Subjunctive Triggers & Usage in Italian (opinions, emotions, doubts)
Subjunctive Triggers and Usage (Uso del congiuntivo presente e inneschi sintattici)
The subjunctive is triggered in subordinate clauses by verbs of opinion (penso che), emotion (sono felice che), doubt/uncertainty (dubito che), desire (voglio che), impersonal expressions (è necessario che), and conjunctions (prima che, benché, a meno che).
In Italian syntax, the *Subjunctive Mood (Congiuntivo) is strictly required in subordinate che*-clauses when the main clause expresses non-factual, subjective, emotional, or prospective modality. Italian preserves a much heavier everyday reliance on the subjunctive than French or Spanish:
- Mandatory Subordinating Conjunctions: prima che (before), benché / sebbene / malgrado (although), affinché / perché (so that / in order that), purché / a patto che (provided that), senza che (without), a meno che non* (unless).
2. The Identity Rule (Infinitive vs. Subjunctive): When the subject of the main clause and the subordinate clause is identical, Italian *does not use the subjunctive with che*; instead, it simplifies to DI + INFINITIVE*: - Io penso che tu sia bravo (Different subjects: Subjunctive). - Io penso di essere bravo (Same subject: Infinitive — NOT Io penso che io sia bravo*!).
