Formed with imperfect subjunctive of essere/avere + past participle, expressing past anteriority dependent on past triggers (credevo che fosse partito) or unreal past counterfactual conditions with se (se avessi saputo, sarei venuto).
In Italian grammar, the *Pluperfect Subjunctive (Congiuntivo trapassato / composto)* expresses past anteriority (an event completed prior to a past point of reference) in subordinate clauses or counterfactual conditions:
1. Structural Formula: Auxiliary in Congiuntivo Imperfetto (avessi / fossi) + Past Participle - Conjugation with Avere: che io/tu avessi fatto, che lui avesse fatto, che noi avessimo fatto, che voi aveste fatto, che loro avessero fatto - Conjugation with Essere: che io/tu fossi andato/a, che lui/lei fosse andato/a, che noi fossimo andati/e, che voi foste andati/e, che loro fossero andati/e.
2. Core Function 1: Subordination with Past Anteriority: Used when the governing main clause is in a past tense (passato prossimo, imperfetto, trapassato) and the subordinate event occurred prior to that past moment: - Credevo che Marco avesse già superato l'esame. (I believed that Marco had already passed the exam). - Temevo che loro fossero partiti senza di me. (I was afraid they had left without me).

I feared that they had gone away without waiting for our arrival at the airport.
