Direct and Negative Imperative (Imperativo diretto: tu, noi, voi e negazione)
Direct commands for tu (-are → -a: parla!, -ere/-ire → -i: scrivi!, dormi!), noi (-iamo), voi (-ate, -ete, -ite); the negative command for tu obligatorily uses non + infinitive (non parlare! non correre!).
In Italian grammar, the *Direct Imperative (Imperativo diretto) issues orders, instructions, exhortations, and advice to informal interlocutors: tu (you sg.), noi (let's...), and voi* (you pl.):
1. Affirmative Direct Imperative Paradigms: - 1st Conjugation (-are): tu takes -a (unlike present indicative parli!): *Parla! (Speak!), noi takes -iamo (Parliamo! = Let's talk), voi takes -ate (Parlate! = Speak pl.). - 2nd Conjugation (-ere): tu takes -i: Scrivi! (Write!), noi takes -iamo (Scriviamo!), voi takes -ete (Scrivete!). - 3rd Conjugation (-ire): tu takes -i: Dormi! (Sleep!), Apri! (Open!), noi takes -iamo (Apriamo!), voi takes -ite (Aprite!*).
2. Irregular Monosyllabic Tu Imperatives: Five key verbs have truncated monosyllabic forms for tu, which double the initial consonant of attached clitic pronouns (raddoppiamento fonosintattico): - andare → va' / vai! (Vacci! = Go there!) - dare → da' / dai! (Dammi il libro! = Give me the book!) - fare → fa' / fai! (Fammi vedere! = Let me see!) - stare → sta' / stai! (Stammi a sentire! = Listen to me!) - dire → di'! (Dimmi tutto! = Tell me everything!).
*3. The Crucial Negative Imperative Rule (Imperativo negativo): - For tu, Italian strictly prohibits finite forms with non; instead, it obligatorily uses NON + INFINITIVE: - Non parlare! (Don't speak! — NOT Non parli!) - Non correre! (Don't run!) - Non avere paura! (Don't be afraid!). - For noi and voi, simply place non before the standard form: Non parliamo!, Non gridate!*.
