Verb Preposition Regimes with Infinitives (A vs. DI) in Italian
Infinitive Complements and Verb Prepositions (Infinito e reggenze: a vs. di)
When verbs link to a dependent infinitive, they govern specific prepositions: A (andare a, iniziare a, imparare a, riuscire a) vs. DI (decidere di, finire di, pensare di, cercare di, sperare di).
In Italian syntax, when a conjugated verb is followed by a dependent subordinate infinitive (verbo all'infinito), Italian requires a specific linking preposition — almost always either A or DI (unlike modal verbs which take no preposition):
1. High-Frequency Verbs Governing PREPOSITION A + Infinitive: Associated with movement, initiation, learning, continuing, or achieving a result: - andare a fare (to go do) - venire a vedere (to come see) - cominciare / iniziare a studiare (to start studying) - imparare a parlare (to learn to speak) - insegnare a scrivere (to teach to write) - continuare a leggere (to continue reading) - riuscire a capire (to succeed in understanding / to manage to) - abituarsi a vivere (to get used to living) - provare a fare (to try doing) - aiutare a preparare (to help prepare).
2. High-Frequency Verbs Governing PREPOSITION DI + Infinitive: Associated with decision, cessation, thinking, requesting, or attempting: - decidere di partire (to decide to leave) - finire / smettere di fumare (to finish / stop smoking) - cercare di fare (to try to do) - pensare di andare (to plan/think of going) - sperare di vincere (to hope to win) - ricordarsi di chiamare (to remember to call) - dimenticare di fare (to forget to do) - chiedere di parlare (to ask to speak) - avere bisogno / paura di fare (to need / be afraid to do).
3. Verbs with NO Preposition: - Modals (dovere, potere, volere, sapere): Voglio andare, Devo studiare. - Perception verbs (vedere, sentire): Sento cantare. - Preferire: Preferisco restare.

Abbiamo finalmente deciso di comprare un appartamento più grande e luminoso in centro.
We have finally decided to buy a larger and brighter apartment in the city center.
Ho iniziato a studiare la lingua italiana tre anni fa e continuo a esercitarmi ogni giorno.
I started studying the Italian language three years ago and continue to practice every day.
Non riesco a capire questo difficile passaggio letterario senza l'aiuto del vocabolario.
I cannot manage to understand this difficult literary passage without the help of the dictionary.
