Modal Verbs in Italian (dovere, potere, volere, sapere)
Modal Verbs (Verbi servili / modali: dovere, potere, volere, sapere)
Dovere (must/have to), potere (can/to be able to), volere (want to), and sapere (know how to) combine directly with infinitives; in compound tenses, auxiliary choice follows the dependent infinitive.
In Italian grammar, *Modal Verbs (Verbi servili o modali) — dovere, potere, volere, sapere* — accompany a dependent infinitive directly without prepositions, expressing necessity, permission/ability, desire, and learned capacity:
1. Present Tense Conjugations: - *dovere (must / to have to): devo / debbo, devi, deve, dobbiamo, dovete, devono - potere (can / to be able to / may): posso, puoi, può, possiamo, potete, possono - volere (to want): voglio, vuoi, vuole, vogliamo, volete, vogliono - sapere (to know how to): so, sai, sa, sappiamo, sapete, sanno*.
*2. The Dual Auxiliary Choice in Compound Tenses (Regola dell'ausiliare con i servili): In compound tenses (passato prossimo), the modal verb can take either avere or the auxiliary required by the dependent infinitive: - If dependent verb takes avere: modal takes avere → Ho dovuto studiare (studiare takes avere). - If dependent verb takes essere: modal can take essere with full gender/number agreement (standard literary preference) or avere: - Sono dovuto andare (preferred) / Ho dovuto andare (I had to go). - Maria è voluta partire (preferred: fem. sg. agreement) / Maria ha voluto partire*.
3. Pronoun Clitic Placement with Modals: Clitic pronouns can either attach to the infinitive (dropping final -e) or precede the conjugated modal: - Devo chiamarlo = Lo devo chiamare (I must call him). - Voglio andarcene = Ce ne voglio andare.
