Auxiliary Choice (Essere vs. Avere) & Participle Agreement in Italian
Auxiliary Choice: Essere vs. Avere (Scelta dell'ausiliare essere o avere)
Transitive verbs take avere (no agreement: abbiamo parlato); verbs of motion, state, change of condition, reflexives, and impersonals take essere, obligatorily agreeing in gender and number with the subject (sono andato/andata, siamo partiti/partite).
Unlike Spanish (which solely uses haber) and English (which solely uses have), Italian has a strict *Auxiliary Verb Choice (Scelta dell'ausiliare) system for all compound tenses between avere and essere*:
1. Verbs That Take AVERE: - *All Transitive Verbs (Verbi transitivi): Verbs that take a direct object (answering Chi? or Che cosa?): mangiare, leggere, scrivere, comprare, vedere, amare. - Many Intransitive Action Verbs: camminare (to walk), viaggiare (to travel), lavorare, dormire, parlare, telefonare, nuotare. - Rule with Avere: The past participle ends in -o and does NOT agree with the subject: Maria ha dormito, I ragazzi hanno camminato*.
2. Verbs That Take ESSERE: - Verbs of Movement with Destination: andare, venire, arrivare, partire, entrare, uscire, tornare, salire, scendere. - Verbs of State and Location: essere, stare, rimanere, restare. - Verbs of Change of Condition: nascere, morire, diventare, crescere, ingrassare. - All Reflexive and Reciprocal Verbs: alzarsi, lavarsi, incontrarsi. - Impersonal Verbs: succedere, accadere, piacere, sembrare.
3. Mandatory Agreement Rule with ESSERE: Whenever essere is the auxiliary, the past participle MUST agree in gender and number with the grammatical subject (like an adjective): - Marco è andat-o* (masc. sg.) vs. Maria è andat-a (fem. sg.) - I ragazzi sono partit-i (masc. pl.) vs. Le ragazze sono partit-e* (fem. pl.).

Le mie sorelle sono arrivate a Roma ieri mattina e sono andate subito in albergo.
My sisters arrived in Rome yesterday morning and went immediately to the hotel.
Marco e Paolo hanno lavorato duramente tutto il giorno per completare il progetto.
Marco and Paolo worked hard all day to complete the project.
Siamo rimasti a casa durante il temporale perché è piovuto fortissimo per ore.
We stayed at home during the storm because it rained very heavily for hours.
La professoressa è nata a Napoli ma è cresciuta e ha studiato a Bologna.
The female professor was born in Naples but grew up and studied in Bologna.
