The Passato Prossimo & Regular Past Participles in Italian
Passato Prossimo Formation (Passato prossimo e participio passato: -ato, -uto, -ito)
The primary past tense in Italian, formed with auxiliary essere or avere in present indicative + the past participle (participio passato: -are → -ato, -ere → -uto, -ire → -ito).
In Italian grammar, the *Passato Prossimo (Recent / Perfect Past)* is the standard compound past tense used in spoken and written Italian to express completed actions that occurred at a specific time in the past or have present relevance:
1. Structural Formula: Auxiliary (AVERE or ESSERE in Present) + *Past Participle (Participio Passato)*
2. Regular Past Participle Endings: - 1st Conjugation (-are → -ato): parlare → parlato* (spoken), mangiare → mangiato, lavorare → lavorato. - 2nd Conjugation (-ere → -uto): credere → creduto (believed), ricevere → ricevuto, sapere → saputo. - 3rd Conjugation (-ire → -ito): dormire → dormito (slept), capire → capito, sentire → sentito*.
*3. Conjugation Example with Avere (Ho mangiato): - io ho mangiato, tu hai mangiato, lui/lei ha mangiato, noi abbiamo mangiato, voi avete mangiato, loro hanno mangiato. - Notice: With the auxiliary avere, the regular past participle remains invariable in -o (abbiamo mangiato, never abbiamo mangiati* unless triggered by direct clitic pronouns).
Contrast with Spanish & French: Spanish only has haber (no auxiliary choice), whereas Italian divides verbs between avere and essere with strict subject agreement.
