Relative Pronouns in Italian (che, cui, il quale)
Relative Pronouns (Pronomi relativi: che, cui, il quale)
Che is invariable for subject/direct object (who/which/that); cui is used after all prepositions (di cui, a cui, con cui); il quale (la quale, i quali, le quali) inflects fully for formal disambiguation.
In Italian syntax, *Relative Pronouns (Pronomi relativi)* link a subordinate relative clause to an antecedent noun. Italian possesses a clean three-tiered relative pronoun system:
1. CHE (Invariable Subject or Direct Object — 'Who / Which / That'): - Replaces people or things functioning as the subject or direct object of the relative clause without any prepositions: - Il ragazzo che parla con Marco è mio fratello. (Subject: The boy who is speaking...) - Il libro che ho comprato ieri è interessante. (Direct Object: The book that I bought...).
2. CUI (Invariable Indirect Object with Prepositions — 'Whom / Which / Whose'): - Used after all simple and articulated prepositions (a cui, di cui, con cui, in cui, per cui, da cui): - La persona a cui ho scritto. (The person to whom I wrote). - La città in cui sono nato. (The city in which I was born). - L'argomento di cui parliamo. (The topic about which we speak). - *Possessive Relative (il cui / la cui / i cui / le cui = 'Whose'): Article + cui + noun indicates possession: Lo scrittore il cui libro ha vinto il premio (The writer whose book* won the prize).
3. IL QUALE / LA QUALE / I QUALI / LE QUALI (Variable Forms): - Fully inflects for gender and number with the definite article, matching the antecedent. Used primarily in formal writing or when needed to resolve antecedent ambiguity between multiple nouns of different genders: Ho incontrato la madre di Marco, la quale mi ha salutato (Specifies clearly that the mother greeted me, not Marco).
