Imperative and Optative Moods
The imperative issues direct commands across informal, polite, and plural forms, while the optative (-ғысы келу) expresses desires and wishes.
In Kazakh, directives and wishes are expressed via the *Imperative Mood (Бұйрық рай) and the Optative / Desiderative Mood (Қалау рай)*:
1. Imperative Mood: Strictly encodes interpersonal hierarchy and politeness: - 2nd Person Informal: Bare stem for singular (жаз = write!), plural in -(ы)ңдар / -(і)ңдер (жазыңдар = you all write!). - 2nd Person Polite: Singular in -(ы)ңыз / -(і)ңіз (жазыңыз = please write), plural in -(ы)ңыздар / -(і)ңіздер (жазыңыздар). - 1st Person Cohortative / Imperative: Singular -(а)йын / -(е)йін (жазайын = let me write), plural -(а)йық / -(е)йік (жазайық = let's write!). - 3rd Person: Suffix -сын / -сін (жазсын = let him write, келсін = let him come).
2. Optative / Wish Mood (-ғы/-гі/-қы/-кі + келу): Formed with the desiderative participle + possessive + the auxiliary verb келу (to come): - Менің бар-ғы-м келеді (I want to go / lit. 'my wanting-to-go comes') - Оның көр-гі-сі келеді (He wants to see) - Біздің сөйлес-кі-міз келеді (We want to talk).
Polite Softening with -шы/-ші: Adding -шы/-ші softens commands into courteous entreaties: айтыңызшы (please tell me), келші (please come).
