Necessity Mood (-у керек / -у қажет)
Necessity ('must, need to, should') is expressed with the verbal noun in -у followed by керек, қажет, or тиіс.
In Kazakh, the *Necessity Mood (Қажеттілік мәнді сөйлемдер) corresponds to English modal auxiliaries 'must, should, ought to, have to, need to'. It is formed analytically by combining the verbal noun / infinitive in -у* with one of three modal predicate words:
1. Керек (need to, must, necessary): General everyday necessity. 2. Қажет (necessary, required): Formal, official, or objective necessity. 3. Тиіс / Тиісті (obliged to, must, duty-bound): Strict moral or legal obligation.
Two Person-Marking Strategies: - Possessive Marking on the Infinitive: The subject is put into the Genitive Case (менің, сенің, оның), and the infinitive takes the corresponding possessive suffix: - Менің бар-у-ым керек (I must go / lit. 'my going is necessary') - Сенің оқы-у-ың қажет (You need to study) - Біздің ерте тұр-у-ымыз керек (We must get up early). - Predicative Endings on Тиіс: When using тиіс, the subject remains in the Nominative Case, and personal endings attach directly to тиіс: - Мен оқы-у-ға тиіс-пін (I am obliged to study), Біз кел-у-ге тиіс-піз (We must come).
Negation: Formed with керек емес or қажет емес: Оған барудың керегі жоқ / бару керек емес (There is no need to go).
