Consonant Harmony & Assimilation in Kazakh

Kazakh Consonant Harmony and Assimilation (дауыссыздар үндестігі) regulates how the initial consonant of a suffix morphs depending on the final sound of the preceding noun or verb stem. Kazakh consonants are partitioned into three acoustic classes:

1. *Voiceless (қатаң): к, қ, п, с, т, ф, х, ц, ч, ш, щ. 2. Voiced (ұяң): б, в, г, ғ, д, ж, з. 3. Sonorant (үнді): р, л, й, у, м, н, ң*.

Key morphophonological rules: - Voiceless assimilation: Stems ending in a voiceless consonant require suffixes beginning with a voiceless consonant: кітап + plural → кітаптар*; мектеп + dative → мектепке; сабақ + locative → сабақта. - Sonorant & Vowel triggers: Stems ending in vowels (а, е, ы, і) or sonorants (р, л, й, у) take sonorant or voiced variants: балалар, үйлер, ауылдар. - Voicing / Softening of Stem Finals: When a stem ending in voiceless қ, к, п receives a suffix starting with a vowel, the consonant obligatorily softens into ғ, г, б: сабақ + -ы → сабағы (his lesson), жүрек + -ім → жүрегім (my heart), кітап + -ым → кітабым* (my book).
