Vowel Harmony (Singharmonism) in Kazakh

Vowel Harmony (дауыстылар үндестігі or palatal synharmonism) is the foundational phonological law governing Kazakh word formation and suffixation. Kazakh vowels are strictly divided into two harmonious classes:

1. *Back / Hard Vowels (жуан дауыстылар): а, о, ұ, ы (and у when functioning as back vowel in тау, оқу). 2. Front / Soft Vowels (жіңішке дауыстылар): ә, ө, ү, і, е (and у when soft in келу, жүру*).

All inflectional suffixes exist in paired back/front variants. If the final syllable of a root contains a back vowel, all subsequent suffixes must take the back variant: бала → балалар* (children), дос → достарға** (to friends), қала → қалада (in the city). If the final syllable contains a front vowel, the suffixes must take the front variant: үй → үйлер (houses), мектеп → мектепке (to school), дәптер → дәптерде* (in the notebook).

Unlike Turkish, Kazakh vowel harmony also encompasses a second phonological layer known as *Labial Harmony (ерін үндестігі), where rounding from о, ө, ұ, ү* influences the pronunciation of subsequent open vowels in spoken speech. Learners must always inspect the last syllable's vowel before choosing suffix allomorphs.
