Labial harmony causes unrounded vowels (ы, і, е, а) following rounded vowels (о, ө, ұ, ү) to be pronounced with lip-rounding.
*Labial Harmony (ерін үндестігі) is a distinctive phonetic characteristic of the Kazakh language that operates in spoken discourse alongside standard palatal (back/front) harmony. When the initial syllable of a word contains a rounded labial vowel (о, ө, ұ, ү), the unrounded vowels in subsequent syllables (ы, і, е, and sometimes а*) are assimilated and pronounced with rounded lips in natural spoken speech.
Key phonetic realizations: - Written құлын (foal) is pronounced [құлұн]. - Written көздің (of the eye) is pronounced [көздүң]. - Written жұлдыз (star) is pronounced [жұлдұз]. - Written көлеңке (shadow) is pronounced [көлөңкө].
Orthography vs. Orthoepy: In modern standard Kazakh orthography (емле ережесі), words are written according to palatal/historical spelling without changing the written letter to ұ/ү/ө (құлын, көздің, жұмыс), but standard orthoepic rules (айтылу ережесі) dictate that they must be pronounced with labial assimilation. Foreign learners who read Kazakh mechanically with flat vowels often sound stiff and unnatural to native speakers.
