Spatial Postpositional Nouns (үсті, асты, іші, алды, арты, жаны)
Spatial relations (on, under, inside, in front of, behind, beside) are formed by spatial auxiliary nouns taking 3rd person possessive and case endings.
Kazakh does not have spatial prepositions like English on, under, in, behind. Instead, it uses a rich inventory of *Spatial Auxiliary Nouns (Көмекші есімдер) in possessive izafet constructions. The landmark noun is placed in the bare nominative (or genitive), while the spatial noun takes the 3rd person possessive suffix (-ы/-і/-сы/-сі) followed by the required locational case suffix*:
Core Spatial Nouns: - Үст- (top / surface) → үстінде (on / on top of), үстіне (onto), үстінен (from upon): үстелдің үстінде (on the table). - Аст- (bottom / underneath) → астында (under / underneath): ағаштың астында (under the tree). - Іш- (inside / interior) → ішінде (inside / in): үйдің ішінде (inside the house). - Тыс- / Сұрт- (outside) → сыртында (outside of): қаланың сыртында (outside the city). - Алд- (front) → алдында (in front of / before): мектептің алдында (in front of the school). - Арт- (back / behind) → артында (behind / in the back of): үйдің артында (behind the house). - Қас- / Жан- (side / proximity) → қасында / жанында (beside / near / next to): өзеннің жанында (beside the river). - Ара- (between / among) → арасында (between / among): достардың арасында (among friends).
Case inflection varies dynamically: үстелдің үстіне қой (put it onto the table, dative) vs. үстелдің үстінен ал (take it off the table, ablative).

The new textbooks and notebooks are lying on top of the teacher's desk.

During the recess, the students played in the beautiful park in front of the school.
