Converbs & Gerunds (Көсемшелер) in Kazakh

In Kazakh, *Converbs (Көсемшелер)* are non-finite verb forms acting as adverbial modifiers of the main predicate. They connect consecutive actions, express manner, or govern temporal clauses without conjunctions:

Major Converb Categories: 1. Sequential / Conjunctive Converb (-ып / -іп / -п): Expresses an action completed immediately before or tightly linked to the main verb (corresponding to English 'having done...' or coordinate 'and'): - Асқар таңғы асын іш-іп, жұмысқа кетті (Asqar had his breakfast and went to work). - Also forms analytical compound verbs: оқып шықты (read through), алып келді (brought). 2. Simultaneous / Continuous Converb (-а / -е / -й): Expresses an action occurring concurrently with the main action (often reduplicated for continuous duration): - Ол күл-е сөйледі (He spoke smilingly). - Жүгір-е-жүгір-е шаршады (He grew tired from continuous running). 3. Temporal Limit Converb (-ғанша / -генше, -қанша / -кенше): Corresponds to 'until, while, as long as': - Күн бат-қанша жұмыс істедік (We worked until the sun set). - Сен кел-генше мен кітап оқимын (Until you come, I will read a book). 4. Starting Point Converb (-ғалы / -гелі, -қалы / -келі): Corresponds to 'since, ever since': - Осында кел-гелі үш жыл болды (It has been three years since I came here).

Converbs never inflect for person on their own; person agreement is carried entirely by the final finite verb.
