Indirect Speech and the Quotative Particle (деп)
Reported speech, intentions, and causal motivations are constructed using the converb деп ('saying / that') after direct or modified quotes.
In Kazakh, direct quotations, indirect speech, thought reports, purposes, and intentions are overwhelmingly channeled through the quotative converb деп (the fossilized converb of деу, 'to say'):
Major Communicative Uses: 1. Reported Speech and Quotation ('X said that...'): The quoted statement is left in its direct form, followed by деп, concluded by a speech verb (айтты, сұрады, жауап берді): - Асқар: «Мен ертең келемін», — деп айтты (Asqar said, 'I will come tomorrow'). - Мұғалім сабаққа дайындалыңдар деп тапсырды (The teacher instructed us to prepare for class). 2. Mental Attitude and Thoughts ('thinking that...'): Followed by cognition verbs (ойлады, есептеді, түсінді): - Біз жаңбыр жауады деп ойладық (We thought that it would rain). 3. Purposive and Intentional Clauses ('in order to, intending to'): Placed after an optative, future, or imperative verb to mean 'with the intention of': - Кітап оқиын деп кітапханаға бардым (I went to the library intending to read a book). - Үйге жетейік деп асықтық (We hurried in order to reach home).
