Possessive Adjectives and Pronouns (meu, tău, său)
Possessive adjectives follow the definite-articled noun and agree in gender and number with the possessed object (fratele meu, sora mea, cărțile mele).
In Romanian, *Possessive Adjectives (adjectivele posesive) typically follow the noun they modify. Crucially, the possessed noun must obligatorily carry the enclitic definite article (e.g. fratele meu, casa mea), unless preceded by the possessive article al/a/ai/ale*.
Paradigm of Possessive Forms (agreeing with the possessed noun): 1. 1st person (my / our): - Masc. sg.: prietenul meu* (my friend) / prietenul nostru (our friend) - Fem. sg.: prietena mea / prietena noastră - Masc. pl.: prietenii mei / prietenii noștri - Fem./Neut. pl.: cărțile mele / cărțile noastre. 2. 2nd person (your sg. / your pl.): - Masc. sg.: fratele tău / fratele vostru - Fem. sg.: sora ta / sora voastră - Masc. pl.: frații tăi / frații voștri - Fem./Neut. pl.: surorile tale / surorile voastre. 3. 3rd person (his/her / their): - For 3rd person singular, său / sa / săi / sale is used only for the subject's own possession (reflexive possession). For non-reflexive possession, Romanian prefers the genitive pronouns lui (his) and ei (her): mașina lui (his car), casa ei (her house). - For 3rd person plural, lor (their) is invariant: casa lor (their house), cărțile lor* (their books).
A common beginner mistake is omitting the definite article on the noun (frate meu instead of fratele meu).
