Clitic Pronoun Clusters & Ordering in Romanian

Clitic Clusters and Combined Pronoun Ordering (mi-l, ți-o, i le)

When combining indirect (dative) and direct (accusative) object clitics, Dative strictly precedes Accusative, fusing with hyphens (mi-l dai, ți-o trimit).

When a Romanian clause contains both an indirect object clitic (Dative: to whom) and a direct object clitic (Accusative: what/whom), they merge into a tightly bound *Clitic Pronoun Cluster (Grupul clitic)*.

Strict Ordering Principle: DATIVE ALWAYS PRECEDES ACCUSATIVE: Dative Clitic (Indirect)Accusative Clitic (Direct)Verb / Auxiliary

Major Clitic Fusion Combinations: 1. With 3rd Masc. Direct Object (îl / -l): - îmi + îlmi-l (Mi-l dai? = Do you give it to me?) - îți + îlți-l (Ți-l trimit = I send it to you) - îi + îli-l (I-l arăt = I show it to him/her) - ne + îlni-l (Ni-l aduce = He brings it to us) - + îlvi-l (Vi-l prezint = I present him to you) - le + îlli-l (Li-l explică = He explains it to them). 2. With 3rd Fem. Direct Object (o): - îmi + omi-o (Mi-o cumperi? = Will you buy it for me?) - îți + oți-o (Ți-o dau = I give it to you) - îi + oi-o (I-o trimit) - ne + one-o - + ov-o (V-o arăt). 3. With 3rd Plural Direct Objects (îi / i- and le): - mi-i (them masc. to me), mi le (them fem. to me), ți-i, ți le, i-i, i le, ni-i, ni le, vi-i, vi le, li-i, li le.

In past tenses, clitic clusters fuse directly onto the auxiliary verb with hyphens: Mi l-a dat (He gave it to me), Ți-am trimis-o (I sent it to you).
