Reflexive Verbs & Pronominal Forms in Romanian
Reflexive Verbs and Pronouns (se / își)
Reflexive verbs combine with accusative (mă, te, se, ne, vă, se) or dative (îmi, îți, își, ne, vă, își) reflexive clitics, expressing self-action, state, or reciprocity.
In Romanian, *Reflexive Verbs (verbele reflexive) are conjugated in tandem with dedicated unstressed reflexive clitic pronouns that match the grammatical person of the subject. Romanian distinguishes between Accusative Reflexives (action on oneself) and Dative Reflexives* (action for/benefiting oneself):
*1. Accusative Reflexive Paradigm (a se spăla = to wash oneself): - eu mă spăl (I wash myself) - tu te speli (you wash yourself) - el/ea se spală (he/she washes him/herself) - noi ne spălăm (we wash ourselves) - voi vă spălați (you wash yourselves) - ei/ele se spală* (they wash themselves).
*2. Dative Reflexive Paradigm (a-și aminti = to remember, a-și spăla mâinile = to wash one's own hands): - eu îmi amintesc (I remember) - tu îți amintești - el/ea își amintește - noi ne amintim - voi vă amintiți - ei/ele își amintesc*.
Compound Tense Placement: In compound tenses like the Perfect Compus, the reflexive clitic is placed *before the auxiliary a avea**: Eu m-am trezit (I woke up), Noi ne-am întâlnit (We met), Ei s-au bucurat* (They rejoiced).
