The Accusative Case in Slovak (Akuzatív)
Accusative Case (Akuzatív: Koho? Čo?)
Answers Koho? Čo? (Whomever? What?), marking direct objects of transitive verbs; masculine animates match the genitive (-a), while inanimates match the nominative.
In Slovak syntax, the *Accusative Case (Akuzatív) is the primary direct object case answering Koho? (Whom?) for animate beings and Čo? (What?)* for inanimate objects and concepts:
1. Primary Syntactic Roles: - *Direct Object of Transitive Verbs (Priamy predmet): Čítam zaujímavú knihu (I am reading an interesting book), Vidím starého priateľa (I see an old friend). - Motion and Direction after Prepositions: Governed by prepositions denoting movement into, onto, or behind (v/na/pod/nad/za/pred + akuzatív vs. static locative/instrumental): Idem na poštu (I go to the post office - accusative) vs. Som na pošte (I am at the post office - locative). - Prepositions exclusively governing Accusative: pre (for), cez (through/across), pretože*.
2. The Animacy Split in Masculine Singular: - *Animate Masculine (Mužský životný): Accusative is identical to the Genitive ending in -a (Vidím brata, študenta, psa). - Inanimate Masculine (Mužský neživotný): Accusative is identical to the Nominative with zero ending (Vidím nový stôl, moderný počítač*).
3. Feminine and Neuter Endings: - Feminine singular: Endings shift -a → -u (žena → ženu, kniha → knihu). - Neuter singular: Remains identical to the Nominative (mesto → mesto, auto → auto).
Learner Mistake: Using the nominative for masculine animates (Vidím môj otec instead of Vidím môjho otca), or confusing motion accusative (Dám to na stôl) with static locative (Leží to na stole).
