The Nominative Case in Slovak (Nominatív)

Nominative Case (Nominatív: Kto? Čo?)

The base dictionary form answering Kto? Čo? (Who? What?), marking the grammatical subject of the sentence and standard forms of direct address.

In Slovak grammar, the *Nominative Case (Nominatív) is the primary, non-prepositional case answering the questions Kto? (Who?) for animate beings and Čo? (What?)* for inanimate entities and abstractions:

1. Primary Syntactic Functions: - *Grammatical Subject (Podmet): The agent or theme of the clause: Môj brat študuje v Košiciach. (My brother studies in Košice). - Predicate Nominal (Menissová časť prísudku): Complements the linking verb byť in present definitions: Bratislava je hlavné mesto Slovenska. (Bratislava is the capital of Slovakia). - Direct Address (Priame oslovenie): Because Slovak has no separate vocative case, the nominative is the sole standard form used to address people directly: Pán profesor, môžem sa niečo opýtať?* (Professor, may I ask something?).

2. Typical Singular Endings by Gender: - *Masculine (Mužský rod): Consonant for hard/soft inanimate and animate stems (chlap, dub, stroj), or -a for animate masculine nouns (hrdina, sluha, kolega). - Feminine (Ženský rod): Characteristic ending -a (žena, ulica), or consonant for root-declension nouns (kosť, dlaň, noc). - Neuter (Stredný rod): Characteristic endings -o (mesto), -e (srdce), -ie (vysvedčenie), or -a / -ä (dievča, žriebä*).

Learner Mistake: Forgetting that adjectives agreeing with nominative plural animate masculine nouns take ending -í / -i with consonant softening: dobrí chlapci, pekní študenti (vs. inanimate/fem/neut dobré duby, pekné ženy).
