The Six-Case System in Slovak

In Slovak grammar, nominal words (nouns, adjectives, pronouns, and numerals) decline through *Six Grammatical Cases (Pádový systém) in singular and plural. A crucial distinguishing feature of standard modern Slovak—unlike Czech or Polish—is that it has no distinct vocative case; direct address is expressed exclusively with the nominative (Pán učiteľ, poďte sem!*):

1. The Six Modern Cases in Order: - 1. Nominatív (Nominative): Question Kto? Čo? (Who? What?). Marks grammatical subjects and predicate nouns: Študent píše úlohu. - 2. Genitív (Genitive): Question Koho? Čoho? (Whose? Of what?). Marks possession, quantities, negation, and complements of prepositions like od, do, z, bez, u: dom môjho brata, šálka čaju. - 3. Datív (Dative): Question Komu? Čomu? (To whom? To what?). Marks indirect objects/recipients and prepositions k/ku, proti, vďaka: Dávam knihu sestre. - 4. Akuzatív (Accusative): Question Koho? Čo? (Whom? What?). Marks direct objects of transitive verbs and motion prepositions: Vidím dobrého priateľa. - 5. Lokál (Locative): Question O kom? O čom? (About whom/what? Where?). Always bound to prepositions (v, na, o, po, pri): hovoríme o novej práci, bývame v Bratislave. - 6. Inštrumentál (Instrumental): Question Kým? Čím? (With whom? By what means?). Marks instruments, agents, companions with s/so, and spatial prepositions: píšem perom, idem s kamarátom.

Learner Mistake: Attempting to form Czech-style vocative endings (Pane!) in Slovak. Modern standard Slovak uses strictly the nominative for calling or addressing people (Pán Kováč!, Zuzana!).
