The Dative Case in Slovak (Datív)

Dative Case (Datív: Komu? Čomu?)

Answers Komu? Čomu? (To whom? To what?), designating the recipient/indirect object, impersonal physical sensations (je mi teplo), and prepositions k/ku, proti, vďaka, napriek.

In Slovak syntax, the *Dative Case (Datív) is the case of the indirect object, answering the questions Komu? (To whom?) and Čomu? (To what?)*:

1. Primary Syntactic Functions: - *Indirect Object / Recipient (Nepriamy predmet): Dávam knihu sestre. (I give the book to my sister), Píšem list priateľovi. (I am writing a letter to a friend). - Verbs of Communication and Assistance: Governed by verbs like pomáhať (to help), rozumieť (to understand), veriť (to believe), ďakovať (to thank), chutiť (to taste good to): - Pomáham novému študentovi. (I am helping the new student). - Chutí mi slovenská kuchyňa. (I enjoy Slovak cuisine / lit. Slovak cuisine tastes good to me). - Impersonal Physical and Emotional States: Expressed via clitic pronouns in the dative (mi, ti, mu, jej, nám, vám, im): - Je mi zima. (I am cold), Je mi teplo. (I am hot), Je mu smutno. (He feels sad). - Prepositional Governance: Governed strictly by k / ku (towards/to a person), proti (against), vďaka (thanks to), napriek (despite), kvôli* (because of/for the sake of).

2. Typical Endings: - Masculine singular: -ovi for animates (chlapovi, otcovi) and -u for inanimates (dub -> dubu, stroju). - Feminine singular: -e for hard stems (žene, knihe) and -i for soft stems (ulici, stanici, dlani). - Neuter singular: -u (mestu, srdcu, dievčaťu). - Plural: -om for masculines (chlapom, dubom), -ám / -am for feminines (ženám, uliciam), -ám / -am for neuters (mestám).

Learner Mistake: Using pre + accusative instead of simple dative for beneficiaries with verbs of giving/helping (Pomáham pre brata is incorrect; Slovak requires simple dative Pomáham bratovi).
