Slovak Diphthongs (ia, ie, iu, ô) & Morphophonology
Slovak Diphthongs (Dvojhlásky: ia, ie, iu, ô)
Standard Slovak has four phonemic diphthongs: ia, ie, iu, and ô (pronounced [u̯o]), which count phonologically as long syllables and trigger the rhythmic law.
In Slovak phonology and morphology, *Diphthongs (Dvojhlásky)* are tight vocalic glides that constitute the nucleus of a single syllable. Standard Slovak possesses exactly four phonemic diphthongs:
1. The Four Standard Diphthongs: - ia: e.g., žiak (pupil), mesiac (month/moon), piatok (Friday), vysvedčenia (certificates). - ie: e.g., mlieko (milk), rieka (river), pieseň (song), viem (I know). - iu: Occurs primarily in feminine accusative adjective endings: cudziu (foreign fem. acc.), tretiu (third fem. acc.), vyššiu (higher fem. acc.). - ô: Pronounced as a diphthong [u̯o] (a short glide [u] flowing into [o]): e.g., stôl (table, pronounced [stu̯ol]), kôň (horse), môj (my), môžem (I can), nôž (knife).
2. Morphophonological Status as Long Syllables: In Slovak metrical structure, *all four diphthongs count as long syllables (dlhé slabiky). Therefore: - They trigger the Rhythmic Law (Rytmický zákon): when a suffix follows a syllable containing ia, ie, iu, ô, the suffix vowel must be short: - spievať (contains diphthong pie-) → spiev-am (short -am, not -ám!). - biely (contains diphthong bie-) → biel-y, biel-a, biel-e (short endings). - môcť → môž-em*.
*3. Root Vowel Alternations in Declension (Striedanie hlások): - o ↔ ô: stôl → stola, kôň → koňa, nôž → noža. - e ↔ ie: chlieb → chleba, kameň → kamienok*.
Learner Mistake: Pronouncing ô as simple [o] or [ö]. The Slovak letter ô is strictly the diphthong [u̯o] (kôň sounds like kuon).
