Grammatical Gender & Noun Classes in Slovak

Gender and Noun Classes (Rod podstatných mien: mužský, ženský, stredný)

All Slovak nouns belong to masculine (animate/inanimate), feminine, or neuter genders, dictating declension models and adjective agreement.

In Slovak morphology, every noun possesses an inherent grammatical gender: Mužský rod (Masculine), Ženský rod (Feminine), or Stredný rod (Neuter). Gender governs case inflections, pronoun selection, and past tense participle agreement (-l, -la, -lo, -li):

*1. Masculine Gender (Mužský rod): - Subdivided crucially into Animate (Životný) (male humans, animals) and Inanimate (Neživotný) (objects, plants, abstracts). - Declension models: chlap (animate consonant), hrdina (animate in -a), dub (inanimate hard consonant), stroj (inanimate soft consonant), kuli* (foreign in vowel).

*2. Feminine Gender (Ženský rod): - Stems ending predominantly in -a or consonant. - Declension models: žena (hard stem in -a), ulica (soft stem in -a), dlaň (consonant stem, pl. -e), kosť (consonant stem, pl. -i), gazdiná* (female title in -á).

*3. Neuter Gender (Stredný rod): - Stems ending in vowels -o, -e, -ie, -a/-ä. - Declension models: mesto (in -o), srdce (in -e), vysvedčenie (in -ie), dievča* (young beings in -a/-ä).

Learner Mistake: Confusing animate and inanimate masculine patterns. In Slovak, masculine animal nouns decline like animates (chlap) in the singular (pes → psa), but like inanimates (dub/stroj) in the plural (psy, kone), whereas male humans take animate plural -i (chlapci, študenti).
