The Instrumental Case in Slovak (Inštrumentál)

In Slovak grammar, the *Instrumental Case (Inštrumentál) is the 7th case answering S kým? (With whom?) and Čím? (By what means? / With what?)*:

1. Instrumental WITHOUT Preposition (Means & Instrument): - Used bare without prepositions when indicating instruments, tools, routes, or modes of transport: - Píšem list perom. (I am writing a letter with a pen). - Cestujeme rýchlikom. (We are traveling by fast train). - Ideme touto cestou. (We are going along this road).

2. Instrumental WITH Preposition (Accompaniment & Location): - s / so (with — accompaniment/ingredient): Idem do kina s priateľom (I am going to cinema with a friend), káva s cukrom (coffee with sugar). - *Spatial Prepositions at Rest (Kde?): pod (under), nad (above), za (behind), pred (in front of/before), medzi (between): - Auto stojí pred domom. (The car is parked in front of the house). - Lampa visí nad stolom.* (The lamp hangs above the table).

3. Typical Endings: - Masculine and Neuter singular: -om (chlapom, stolom, mestom, autom). - Feminine singular: -ou (ženou, knihou, ulicou, sestrou). - Plural: -mi / -ami across all genders (chlapmi, stolmi, ženami, mestami, autami).

Learner Mistake: Using preposition s for instruments (Píšem s perom is an anglicism/error; bare instrumental Píšem perom is required for tools, while s is reserved for accompaniment).
