The Locative Case in Slovak (Lokál)

In Slovak grammar, the *Locative Case (Lokál) is unique because it is the only strictly prepositional case in the entire language*; it can never occur without a governing preposition:

1. The Governing Prepositions: - v / vo (in/inside): v meste (in the city), v Bratislave (in Bratislava), vo vlaku (on the train). - na (on/at static location): na stole (on the table), na pošte (at the post office), na univerzite (at the university). - o (about/concerning): hovoríme o novej práci (we are talking about the new job), kniha o histórii (a book about history). - po (after / along / throughout): po obede (after lunch), chodíme po ulici (we walk along the street). - pri (at / near / beside): pri okne (by the window), pri rieke (near the river), pri práci (at work).

2. Typical Endings: - Masculine inanimate singular: -e (stôl → stole, dom → dome) or -i after soft consonants (hotel → hoteli, čaj → čaji) or -u after velars (v parku, na trhu). - Masculine animate singular: -ovi (o bratovi, o učiteľovi). - Feminine singular: -e (kniha → knihe, škola → škole) or -i (ulica → ulici, noc → noci). - Neuter singular: -e (mesto → meste, okno → okne) or -í (námestie → námestí). - Plural: -och for all masculine and neuter nouns (v mestách, v domoch, o chlapoch) and -ách / -ach for feminine nouns (v školách, na uliciach).

Learner Mistake: Using the locative for motion destinations (Idem v meste instead of directional accusative Idem do mesta / Idem na stanicu).
