Relative Clauses & Relative Pronouns in Slovak (ktorý, čo, kto)

Relative Clauses and Relative Pronouns (Prívlastkové vety: ktorý, čo, kto, aký, čí)

Subordinate attributive clauses are introduced by relative pronouns: ktorý (which/who; agrees with antecedent), kto (whoever; for persons without noun antecedent), čo (what/that; informal or abstract relative), and čí (whose).

In Slovak complex syntax, *Relative Clauses (Prívlastkové vzťažné vety)* expand or identify a head noun in the main clause using relative connective pronouns:

1. The Primary Relative Pronoun 'KTORÝ' (Who / Which / That): - Declines like a hard adjective (pekný). - Gender and Number: Match the antecedent noun in the main clause. - Case: Governed entirely by its own syntactic role inside the subordinate clause: - Študent, ktorý (Nom) študuje v Bratislave, je môj kamarát. - Kniha, ktorú (Acc) som včera kúpil, je veľmi zaujímavá. - Profesor, ktorému (Dat) sme pomohli, nám poďakoval.

2. Relative 'ČO' (That / Which / What): - Used when referring to general demonstrative pronouns (všetko čo = everything that, to čo = that which) or in colloquial discourse as an invariable relative marker: Všetko, čo hovoríš, je pravda. (Everything you say is true).

3. Other Specialized Relatives: - Kto: Refers to unspecified persons (Ten, kto hľadá, nájde = He who seeks finds). - Aký: Emphasizes quality/kind (Kúpil som auto, aké som vždy chcel). - Čí / Čia / Čie: Expresses relative possession (Človek, čie meno nepoznám).

4. Punctuation Rule: In Slovak orthography, relative subordinate clauses *must always be separated by a comma (čiarka) from the main clause: Muž, ktorého vidíš, je riaditeľ.*
