The Letters Г and Ґ in Ukrainian

The Letters Г and Ґ (Розрізнення звуків і літер Г та Ґ)

Ukrainian distinguishes the voiced glottal fricative 'г' [ɦ] (like English 'h' in ahead) from the voiced velar plosive 'ґ' [ɡ] (like English 'g' in go: ґанок, ґрунт).

A distinctive phonological hallmark of the Ukrainian language is the contrast between two separate voiced velar/glottal consonants represented by Г г and Ґ ґ:

1. The Letter Г г (Sound [ɦ]): A voiced glottal/pharyngeal fricative, closely resembling the English h in ahead or behind, or Czech/Slovak h. It is one of the most frequent sounds in Ukrainian vocabulary: голос (voice), голова (head), гора (mountain), гарний (pretty), говорити (to speak).

2. The Letter Ґ ґ (Sound [ɡ]): A voiced velar plosive stop, identical to the standard English g in garden or go, Russian г, and Polish g. It exists in a specific inventory of native words and historical loanwords: - Native & traditional words: ґанок (porch), ґрунт (soil/ground), ґудзик (button), ґава (crow), ґрати (metal bars/grate), джеґер / ґзитися. - Foreign proper names & loanwords: Вінсент ван Ґоґ, Ґете (Goethe), дзиґа (spinning top).

Restored to the official alphabet in 1990 after being banned during Soviet standardization, the letter Ґ is an essential phonemic marker. Confusing г and ґ blurs word meaning and impacts authentic Ukrainian pronunciation.
