Euphonic Alternation of У/В and І/Й (Милозвучність: чергування у-в та і-й)
Ukrainian avoids difficult consonant clusters and hiatus by alternating vowels and sonorants: 'у'/'і' between consonants (він і вона, був у Києві) and 'в'/'й' after vowels (вона й він, була в Києві).
A defining hallmark of the Ukrainian phonetic system is Euphony (милозвучність). Ukrainian actively avoids harsh consonant clusters and vowel hiatus (glottal clashes) through the systematic phonetic alternation of У ↔ В and І ↔ Й at word boundaries, in prepositions, and in word-initial prefixes.
1. Rules for У ↔ В: - Use У: Between consonants (був у місті), at the start of a sentence before a consonant (У лісі тихо), or before clusters with в, ф, хв, льв (у вагоні, у Львові). - Use В: After a vowel before a consonant (вона вчителька, живе в Одесі), or between vowels (бува влітку). - Applied to prefixes and roots: учитель / вчитель, увечері / ввечері, університет / в університеті, учений / вчений.
2. Rules for І ↔ Й: - Use І: Between consonants (брат і сестра), at the beginning of a sentence (І тоді ми пішли), or after a pause/punctuation (..., і всі погодилися). - Use Й: Between vowels (Ольга й Андрій), or after a vowel before a consonant (Вона йде). - Applied to prefixes/roots: іти / йти, імені / ймення, імовірно / ймовірно.
Ignoring these euphonic rules makes Ukrainian sound unnatural and harsh to native speakers.
