The Apostrophe Rule in Ukrainian

The Apostrophe (апостроф: ') is a core orthographic character in Ukrainian phonetics. It indicates that the preceding consonant remains hard and non-palatalized, while the following jotated vowel (я, ю, є, ї) retains its full two-sound pronunciation ([йа], [йу], [йе], [йі]).

Key Rules for Writing the Apostrophe: 1. After Labials (б, п, в, м, ф): Whenever a labial is followed by я, ю, є, ї, an apostrophe is mandatory if the labial is root-initial or preceded by a vowel: п'ять (five), м'ясо (meat), солов'ї (nightingales), б'ють (they beat), в'язати (to knit). - Exception: No apostrophe is written if the labial is preceded by another root consonant (except р): свято (holiday), цвях (nail), морквяний (carrot adj.), but черв'як (worm) and торф'яний (peaty) because of р. 2. After Hard 'р' at the end of a syllable: пір'я (feathers), подвір'я (courtyard), бур'ян (weed). 3. After Prefixes ending in a consonant: з'їсти (to eat up), від'їзд (departure), об'єм (volume), роз'яснити (to explain).

In Russian, the hard sign (ъ) or soft sign (ь) is used in these positions. Using Russian spellings like мясо or пять without an apostrophe in Ukrainian is a major orthographic error.
