Codice Fiscale: Getting Your Italian Tax Code

The 16-character code you need before almost anything else in Italy

The codice fiscale is a 16-character alphanumeric code that identifies you to Italian authorities. It is generated from your surname, first name, date and place of birth, and sex, so two people rarely share one.

It is free and usually issued the same day, yet almost nothing works without it: signing a rental contract, opening a bank account, getting a phone plan, registering with the health service or starting a job all require the code first.

📋 How to Obtain a Codice Fiscale

  1. 1

    Decide where to apply

Apply at an Agenzia delle Entrate office in Italy, or before you travel at the Italian consulate in your country of residence.

  2. 2

    Download form AA4/8

Individuals use modello AA4/8. It is available on the Agenzia delle Entrate site and at the counter.

  3. 3

    Fill in personal data exactly

Write your name and birthplace exactly as they appear in your passport. Any mismatch will follow you through every later procedure.

  4. 4

    Take a queue ticket

At the office, take a ticket for servizi ai contribuenti. Many offices now ask you to book a slot online in advance.

  5. 5

    Submit and receive the code

Hand over the form with your identity document. The clerk prints a paper certificate with your code, usually immediately.

  6. 6

    Wait for the tessera sanitaria

Once you register with the health service, a plastic tessera sanitaria carrying the same code is mailed to your address.

What to Bring

  • Passport or national ID, valid and in original
  • A photocopy of the identity document
  • Completed modello AA4/8
  • Permesso di soggiorno or the ricevuta, if you already applied
  • Italian address, if you have one — needed for the tessera sanitaria
  • For minors: the parent’s identity document and the child’s birth certificate

⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Paying a private website for something the state issues free
  • Using a self-calculated code from an online generator — only the Agenzia delle Entrate version is official
  • Spelling your name differently than in your passport, which invalidates the code later
  • Assuming the paper certificate is the tessera sanitaria — they are different documents

💶 Cost and Processing Time

The codice fiscale is issued free of charge. At an Agenzia delle Entrate counter it is normally printed while you wait; consulates abroad may take several days to a few weeks. Beware of websites charging a fee to "obtain" it for you — the code is calculated from your own data and the state never charges for it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get a codice fiscale before moving to Italy?+

Yes. Italian consulates issue it to people who need it for a job offer, property purchase or university enrolment before arrival.

What if my code is spelled wrong?+

Return to any Agenzia delle Entrate office with your passport and ask for a correction. Fixing it early is far easier than after contracts are signed.
