Reported Speech & Lack of Backshifting in Czech
Reported Speech and Sequence of Tenses (Nepřímá řeč)
Unlike English backshifting, Czech reported speech directly retains the original tense used by the speaker (Petr řekl, že má čas = Petr said he has/had time).
In Czech grammar, *Reported Speech (Nepřímá řeč) transforms direct quotations into subordinate clauses introduced by conjunctions such as že (that), aby (for commands/requests), or zda / jestli (for indirect questions*).
*The Crucial Rule: NO Tense Backshifting (Žádný posun časů): Unlike English or Latin, which strictly enforce sequence-of-tense backshifting (e.g. He said: 'I am busy' → He said that he was busy), Czech strictly retains the exact grammatical tense used in the original utterance relative to that moment in time: - Direct Speech: Petr říkal: «Mám hodně práce.» (Present tense) - Indirect Speech: Petr říkal, že má hodně práce. (Literally: Petr said that he has a lot of work — retaining present tense má, NOT past měl!). - Direct Speech: Eva řekla: «Zítra přijdu.» (Future tense) - Indirect Speech: Eva řekla, že zítra přijde.* (Eva said that she will come tomorrow).
Reporting Commands with 'aby': Direct imperatives transform into subordinate clauses introduced by aby + conditional: Učitel nám řekl: «Čtěte!» → Učitel nám řekl, abychom četli. (The teacher told us to read).
