Degrees of Comparison of Adjectives in Czech
Comparison of Adjectives (Stupňování přídavných jmen)
Formed with comparative suffix -ejší/-ější or -ší, and superlative prefix nej- attached directly to the comparative (nový → novější → nejnovější).
In Czech, *Comparison of Adjectives (Stupňování přídavných jmen)* follows regular synthetic morphological rules through three grammatical degrees:
1. Pozitiv (Positive Degree): Base form (mladý, rychlý, starý).
2. Komparativ (Comparative Degree): - Formed by appending suffixes -ejší / -ější or -ší to the adjective root: - nový → novější* (newer) - rychlý → rychlejší (faster) - starý → starší (older, stem palatalizes r → ř) - mladý → mladší (younger) - drahý → dražší (more expensive, h → ž*).
3. Superlativ (Superlative Degree): - Exceptionally regular: simply prefix nej- to the already formed comparative: - nejnovější (the newest) - nejrychlejší (the fastest) - nejstarší (the oldest) - nejdražší (the most expensive).
Crucial Irregular Comparison Pairs: - dobrý → lepší → nejlepší* (good → better → best) - špatný / zlý → horší → nejhorší (bad → worse → worst) - velký → větší → největší (big → bigger → biggest) - malý → menší → nejmenší (small → smaller → smallest) - dlouhý → delší → nejdelší* (long → longer → longest).
