Hard & Soft Adjective Declension in Czech

Hard and Soft Adjective Declension (mladý vs. jarní)

Czech adjectives belong to two paradigms: hard type mladý (-ý, -á, -é) which changes vowel endings by gender/case, and soft type jarní (-í) which maintains long -í.

In Czech nominal morphology, all standard qualifying adjectives decline according to two fundamental paradigms based on the phonological quality of the stem-final consonant: *Hard Adjectives (Tvrdá přídavná jména – vzor Mladý) and Soft Adjectives (Měkká přídavná jména – vzor Jarní)*:

*1. Hard Adjectives (Vzor Mladý): Characterized by variable long vowel endings reflecting gender in the nominative singular: - Masculine: (mladý student, nový dům) - Feminine: (mladá žena, nová kniha) - Neuter: (mladé město, nové auto). - Declension shifts through: Gen. masc./n. -ého, Dat. -ému, Acc. anim. -ého, Acc. fem. -ou, Ins. -ým / -ou. - Plural animate nominative palatalizes: mladí studenti, dobří lidé*.

*2. Soft Adjectives (Vzor Jarní): End in the invariant long vowel across all three genders in the nominative singular and plural: - Masculine: (jarní den, moderní pokoj) - Feminine: (jarní káva, moderní ulice) - Neuter: (jarní počasí, moderní město). - Plural: jarní dny, jarní květiny, jarní města (all take invariant ). - Case endings use -í- throughout: Gen. -ího, Dat. -ímu, Ins. -ím / -í*.
