Passive Voice with Essere, Venire, and Andare (Forma passiva)
Passive constructions use essere (all tenses), venire (simple tenses only, emphasizing dynamic action), or andare (expressing necessity/duty: va fatto = must be done) + past participle agreeing with subject.
In Italian grammar, the *Passive Voice (Forma passiva) transforms the direct object of a transitive verb into the grammatical subject, with the original agent introduced by da* (by). Italian possesses three distinctive auxiliary verbs to construct the passive:
1. Passive with ESSERE (Universal Across All Tenses): - Can be used in both simple and compound tenses; the past participle strictly agrees with the subject: - Il libro è letto da molti studenti. (The book is read by many students). - La casa è stata costruita nel 1900. (The house was built in 1900).
2. Passive with VENIRE (Dynamic Action in Simple Tenses Only): - Used exclusively in simple (non-compound) tenses (presente, imperfetto, futuro, condizionale) to emphasize an ongoing dynamic action and eliminate any ambiguity with a static resulting state: - La porta viene aperta alle otto. (The door is opened at 8:00 [dynamic action] vs. La porta è aperta = is already open [stative condition]). - Le decisioni verranno prese domani. (Decisions will be made tomorrow).
3. Passive with ANDARE (Modal Nuance of Necessity / Obligation): - Used with the past participle in simple tenses to express that something must be done / ought to be done (equivalent to dovere essere fatto): - Questo documento va firmato subito. (This document must be signed immediately). - Le regole vanno rispettate da tutti. (The rules must be respected by everyone). - Il libro è andato perso** (Idiomatic: was lost).
