Formed with the imperfect of essere/avere + past participle, expressing a past action completed prior to another past moment or action (quando sono arrivato, Marco era già uscito).
In Italian grammar, the *Pluperfect Tense (Trapassato prossimo) is a compound past tense used to denote an event or state that was completely finished prior to another past event or reference point expressed in passato prossimo, imperfetto, or passato remoto*:
1. Structural Formula: Auxiliary in Imperfetto (avevo / ero) + Past Participle - Conjugation with Avere: avevo mangiato, avevi mangiato, aveva mangiato, avevamo mangiato, avevate mangiato, avevano mangiato - Conjugation with Essere: ero partito/a, eri partito/a, era partito/a, eravamo partiti/e, eravate partiti/e, erano partiti/e.
2. Core Syntactic Relationships: Commonly paired with temporal markers such as già (already), ancora non (not yet), quando (when), prima che (before), and dopo che (after): - Quando sono arrivato alla stazione, il treno era già partito. (When I arrived at the station [past point], the train had already left [prior event]). - Non avevo mai visto quel film prima di ieri sera. (I had never seen that movie before yesterday evening).
3. Subject Agreement Rules: Whenever essere serves as the auxiliary, standard subject agreement in gender and number applies: Le mie amiche erano già arrivate* (fem. pl. -e*).
